Things You Need to Know about Your Caller ID Display Name

Most people tend to take their caller ID display name for granted. It is common to come across entrepreneurs who believe their business name is just automatically, always going to show up when you call someone. That definitely should be the case, but it’s quite unfortunate not how it always works.

In the event that some program or major telecom software is out there setting everyone’s caller ID name and keeping it updated, then you would be mistaken. Today, we will let you know a few things about branded call display name.

It Doesn’t Happen Automatically

By now you should be aware of the sheer fact that the record with your caller ID display information is regarded to as the CNAM record. You might assume that as soon as they register a new phone number, the CNAM is automatically set so that anyone you call will be able to see it.

This is quite tricky since although some service providers offer that service automatically for you, it is essential that you check with them, considering many providers don’t. It is worth noting that a carrier and a service provider are not the same thing.

Update the CNAM When Switching Providers

Switching service provider is that moment when you’re tasked with the responsibility of verifying that the CNAM has your updated information. Whether your number is attached to a VoIP account, landline, or cell phone, the CNAM record should be updated just the same.

The very moment you transfer your phone number to a new service provider, it is worth noting that this will need to be done again since anytime you port your number to a carrier for any reason, the data doesn’t carry over.

Similar to how the provider automatically updates the CNAM when you get a brand-new number from them, sometimes they won’t. The same is to be said when you decide to switch from one service provider to a different one.

For this reason, you should give them the exact name, as you would like it to display on your  outgoing call ID. Moreover, you should remember that the 15-character limit applies in this scenario. This is unfortunately not something you’ll be notified of unless you decide to ask since a service provider either does it or they don’t. Nevertheless, they probably won’t let you know.
